This is one a good article and a piece of history written by the Columbian. There is going to be a new art piece related to the women who welded ships at Kaiser Shipyards in remembrance.

Take a look here for the article..http://www.columbian.com/news/localNews/2007/12/12072007_Waterfront-Wendy.cfm

I saw that yesterday and was thinking about heading down there today to take a look at it. With the clear skies, I don't need much of an excuse to get outdoors.

I just wonder how long this piece of art will hang around or be gone like some of the other pieces???

What do you mean "gone like the other pieces?"

There were some art pieces that were stored but they have been moved out and put around downtown over the past two years. Or have you not had a chance to walk the line of Light rail, Karma? <wink>

i saw this in the paper, and I thought that spot is a pretty good place to put it. I'm glad to hear that there will be a permanent spot for this down near where the old Kaiser shipyard used to be. Very original and appropriate piece of public art, and like tefen, I think I'll snag the wife for a walk down there soon to see it.

;D

I'm at a bit of a loss as well. The only monument I know of that came up mysteriously missing is the <a href="http://www.scvportland.org/jdp_columbian.html">Jefferson Davis Highway 99 marker</a> erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy.

Is there something else?

By the way... I took my wife down there on Saturday, but we parked Who-Song and Larry's and by the time we got down to the condos she was ready to head back and call it a day. Never did get down to see the welder. Damnit!

Just a side note tefen, the Jefferson Davis Marker ended up at Gee Creek Rest stop I think? Keeping that in Vancouver was no short of controvery at the mayors level in its own right.

yah karma...exactly what are you referring to?? The Jefferson Davis marker is not missing, (more accurately it's in hiding, if anything...). Beyond that I have heard of nothing else that has popped up missing.

Didn't that marker end up at Gee Creek Rest area?

Edited: Take a look at this link. They moved it to gee creek.

The City has disposed of several art pieces or gifts that were given to them? What about that train and totem that used to be down in the park?
There are more things besides these and the monument that have been regifted elsewhere once they don't want these around? History Again???

Karma, The train was gifted to the City of Battle ground from my memory and was just sitting their rusting in a hulk. Yes, there were some volunteers trying to save them down there, but the CIty of Vancouver was trying to redevelop that whole area into some thing more fantastic.

May not have agreed with some of it but at least it was done and is a nice park.

Not sure what happened to the Totem Pole. Any one know where it went?
