ATLANTA (AP) - There's a mutated version of the common cold and it can be deadly. It's killed 10 people in the U.S. in the last 18 months.

And infectious diseases investigator with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says a new variant of an adenovirus has caused at least 140 illnesses in New York, Oregon, Washington and Texas.

It was called boot camp flu when hundreds of Air Force recruits got sick earlier this year at Lackland Air Force base in Texas. One 19-year-old trainee died. The recruits were infected with a variety of cold viruses but at least 100 had been infected by the more virulent mutated virus.

In the CDC report, the earliest case of the mutated virus was found in an infant girl in New York City, who died 12 days after she was born last year.

Can't be too careful these days. I'm actually considering getting my first flu shot in a decade this year, especially after spending four days on my back with pneumonia last week.

Even been in the merry go round pneumonia trip to the hospital and back. That was FUN!

Hope you get better and remember Chief, cut down that stress. Stress makes sicknesses a heck of a lot worse.

DH has been flat on his back all week with this and I'm about ready to put him in the hospital as I think it's more than a cold! Yes get that flu shot and in your case go to the Dr to get it!! I'm waiting until everyone here is healthy as I know what those flu shots do to me!

Does the flu shots make you the party of the neighborhood?

I get those shots every year, the flu and pneumonia shot every 5 years. They're always fun for me! <EG>

I've resisted flu shots for years, but I will submit this year when I follow up with the Doctor next week. I feel I'm extrremely vulnerable to the flu this season and I have no desire to repeat last week's unscheduled stop at SWWMC...

Karma, keep a close eye on your hubbie, and don't wait too long to get him checked out. Dehydration is every bit as dangerous, and getting him to the Doctor for a bag of IV fluids can make a lot of difference...

Since I've been in both karma's DH and Chief's place, I'd say if your sick and dehydrated with the flu, see your doctor immediately? I've been to the hospital for the same reasons and admitted because I couldn't keep my Diabetic sugars under control and the antibiotics sent them into the stratosphere worse than actual inlluenze/pneumonia episode did.

Sounds like a smart idea Chief. If you don't want a repeat of the screaming woman or my favorite, room mate snugger at the nursing home, might be a good idea to get the shot..
