I am hearing on the radio this morning that the extremely bright object in the early morning eastern sky is in fact a comet that has exploded during it's approach to the sun, and has suddenly increased in brightness by several degrees of magnitude.
I saw it this morning and figured it was somehow related to the clear moonlit conditions, but this is in fact a rare occurance we may well be able to see for the next few days.
Link and pics when I can find them.
