In My Opinion
Date: October 2nd, 2007
A couple of interesting article in today’s Columbian. One is on page one “TROUBLE ON CAMPUS” and the other “CITY COUNCIL CHECKS OUT DESIGN FOR NEW LIBRARY” is in the Clark County Section.
Reminds me of stories from the Old Roman Empire, “NERO FIDDLES WHILE ROME BURNS”.
Two sentence that jumped off the Trouble on Campus articles. They were:
“But the violence continues to spill into Fort Vancouver, one of two Vancouver district high schools that lack a full time police officer or school resource officer.”
“— but that would cost about $200,000.00”
One of the big issues in the November election is “Prioritizing the spending of your hard earned tax dollars or the lack thereof”.
How many police officers could we afford if we didn’t spend or lose:
1. $73 million dollars to build without a vote of the People, the Hilton Hotel,
2. $21 million dollars to build the Firstenberg Center
3. Millions and Millions to build money losing Parking Garages
4. Millions dollars selling publicly owned property for pennies on the dollar
5. Million and Millions of dollars giving Legal Kickbacks (tax incentives) to developers.
Granted some of those things may be nice to have and other may border on necessary, but the issue is establishing priorities and the Council’s spending priorities. Apparently, ‘Spending Priorities’ are not something the current council has established nor does it understand or practice. They apparently have and continue to put development ahead of the immediate needs of the People and the education and safety of our Children
Maybe Councilman Smith, Tonkovich and Leavitt can explain what benefit, those families with troubled children living in the Vicinity of Fort Vancouver High School receive from the Kassab and Angelo sweetheart deals and other questionable City Council boondoggles.
The proper education progress cannot happen on an unruly campus. If we don’t properly educate our children, provide sufficient Police and Fire Services we won’t need all the ‘nice to have’ things. I have lived in the area for almost 32 years and it is my opinion that Current Council Members need to pay more attention to the negative things that are happening in our once beautiful, peaceful, and quiet city.
Bigger may provide them with more tax revenues, but it definitely is ‘NOT BETTER’.
It wasn’t good for Rome to have Nero Fiddle while Rome Burned and it is not good for Vancouver to have the City Council Fiddle with Developers while Vancouver deteriorates.
These are just some of the reasons that in November I will vote for:
CHARLIE STEMPER, PAT CAMPBELL & JERRY OLIVER
.
L. M. Patella
CDR USN (ret)
