Need a reason to Vote NO on Proposition #1. Please forward this to everyone on your mailing list.
1. The Port attempted to raise the Property Tax it collects from you 132% without your vote or comment. In fact they did not even have the courtesy to inform the voters until after they imposed the tax that they were even considering it. Only a successful petition drive by the people is allowing your voice to be heard.
2. There is some question as to whether or not the Port of Vancouver, having signed in October 2003 an agreement with Mr. Paul King and Columbia River Alliance For Nurturing the Environment (CRANE) can, as indicated in Former Port Commissioner Bob Moser article on page C9 of Sunday’s columbian, even turn one shovelful of dirt in the Columbia Gateway. Please read Retired Port Commissioner Bob Moser's article.
Please read the Slanted columbian’s companion articles carefully and with the knowledge that they are and have been forever Cheerleaders and Champions of and for every tax increase that has been proposed.
3. The Port is a publicly subsidized business and should operate like a business. They should not be allowed to pick the taxpayers pockets every time they need money to run their business.
4. The Port is Competing with Private industry. They are building an empire. Yet the Port has not nor do they appear willing to provide any evidence that Private industry cannot develop the property.
5. The cleanup of the highly contaminated property in question has yet to be resolved. Once the property is purchased, the port is responsible for the cleanup. Although the port says it won’t take ownership until Alcoa and Evergreen complete the cleanup the Port has already signed a letter of intent to buy the property. Yet little or no information has been provided to the voter on How, When or If the required cleanup will occur and how much it will cost the taxpayers
6. There is NO BENEFIT to the individual taxpayer. The Port's only claim to fame is that with this levy they will create 6000 new jobs, yet a port financed study estimates it will create only 1854 jobs. When in reality with an auto facility and two questionable Ethanol Plants it is doubtful if even 600 jobs will be created.
7. Proposition #1 is a golden opportunity to send to all the tax and spend politician that our taxes are too damn high. That we the people should not only be consulted before taxes are increased, but we should be given the opportunity to comment on whether or not a tax increase is in our best interest. A no vote on this levy will tell all Politicians they will be required to make a compelling case that a tax increase provides more benefit to the taxpayer than it does to the vote hungry politician or the greedy developer.
Emails from others who either oppose or have question about the viability of the port’s outrageous property tax increase will be forwarded separately before you receive your ballot. Please read them.
Don't allow these rascals to tax you out of your home.
