Earlier this year, i snagged a bargain bin bag of assorted hollyhocks at home depot, looking for something to fill in some of the empty spaces in all of my flwerbeds. I've never grown them before, so I figured I would give them a shot, and for $9 bucks how wrong could I be??

Wow!! Look what these things do when you put them in the kind of soil I make...some of these plants are almost 10 feet tall now, and are just coming into their bloom...

the only problem with hollyhocks is that they produce pollen by the pound....bees that service these flowers come out completely coverd in pollen, and the leaves are covered with yellow spots and puffs of pollen from the flowers. karma, you would not like to be near these, I suspect...

;D

those purple ones are almost black when they first open. These are my new favorite, and I'll be looking for some more varieties next year...
