Since you rejected the IDD Levy, and along with it the Letter of Intent that the Port of Vancouver signed with Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics Americas LLC, that could have directly employed 1,193 workers that would amounted to an annual payroll of more than $62 million; as a Candidate for City Council, how do you propose to replace those jobs that you just helped to kill??

sensibilist

Can you replace jobs that don't exist in the first place Chief? This is exactly one of the reasons the IDD failed. Conveniently timed commitments to do business, but only contingent upon a favorable vote. What an unbelievably, almost miraculously timed coincidence. Why do those businesses need a levy approval unless their intention was to shake down the port for some of that taxpayer money?

Fact is, the port has options. Perhaps they can use leases and the resulting revenues for security for a loan/mortgage, or use the revenue stream to pay back a bond issuance?

No Ed, the Port presented a credible plan, and just because you dismiss it, does not make it a lie. I still want to know what the candidate proposes to do instead, since he helped shoot the IDDL down in flames.

What is your official position on the Port Levy? (I know its past the election.. But would like to know..)

2nd Question for Pat: Asked it of your opponent, so I need to ask you..

Officially, what do you think of the Private-for-hire committee that City of Vancouver has?

Waterbuffalo

How do you feel about the Angelo Development application?

They want to build on the former Denny's near Mill Plain off I-5..This "IS" a huge opportunity for the City of Vancouver to put some thing very inspirational at the main entrance to the west side of Vancouver.

Fourth Plain has Veteran Hospital, War hero cemetery and Clark College. SR-500 will have a Park and Ride lot with Leverich Park. But Mill Plain has a derelict Restaraunt on one side and the empty lots/exercise area of Hudson's Bay High school, Marshall Center, Fort Vancouver Library and is the entrance off I-5 to "The Reserve.."

What could you do to help influence this area around Mill Plain for redevelopment? (this includes the old area north where Fort Motel used to exist, Burgerville, and other properties that are being infilled or more developments are occurring..)

As one of the first to criticize the columbian for their inattention to the information needs of the people, I was surprised and pleased at Gregg Herrington’s column “WELCOME TO A C-MINUS ENTRYWAY’ on the heels of my earlier email complaining about having to walk over “Littered Pot Holed Streets, Crumbling Sidewalks with weeds growing up, thru and around them”.

Now! you know if the columbian, has the courage to speak against “the local elected” the conditions of our streets and highways thing have got to be pretty bad. Who knows we may soon, but not before the November Election, see the columbian criticize the individuals, who allowed this to happen, by name, like they do when reporting on the misdeeds of Richfield?

If you want a clean & tidy city with real maintenance throughout the city, not just downtown, help us bring about a change of the Guard. Vote for Charlie Stemper, Pat Campbell and Jerry Oliver in November.

L. M. Patella

He makes it sound like you're going to find a way to pay for cleaning and maintaining I-5 through downtown better than the current City Hall crew are doing, along with that, Larry has repeatedly implied that you will somehow get him sidewalks up in his area of Cascade Park.

What I want to know Pat, is if I endorse you here at Clarkblog, and post nothing but articles that endorse you for every conceivable purpose under the sun, will you promise to get my street paved in front of my house??

Seriously Pat, how else should I interpret these messages??

Just checking in. Taking one of my grandsons up the Lewis River this afternoon. Will be getting back to you early this week. Some of this may already be discussed on my web site www.patservesus.com but my emphasis if elected will be to take care of what we already are obligated to such as basic services, pension fund payments in arrears, and periodic maintenance before creating a bow wake of further obligations. I am also interested in getting the city out of being in competition and/or collusion with private enterpirse.

Oh! I am not seeking endorsements. You simply invited me to express my views using your forum Bob, and that is what I have been trying to do. - Pat

I'm just wondering about the implied tit for tat, the quid pro quo if you will. Certainly this guy is motivated by something, and I was wondering what he thinks he's getting for all of the daily bluster, and was looking at what might be in it for me if I did the same thing...

We've already proven that the best way to keep Charlie Stemper around is to not ask him any questions, so I thought we might see how Pat handles it as well.

Just askin', and still waiting for an answer to the original query...

1. IDD - I with others wanted to have a public vote on this tax increase. I have been sceptical regarding the Port's employment and economic claims since the late 1990's. With a public vote looming, they were unable to convince 50% of us that this was the good deal they made it out to be.

In Communist China Walleniius Wilhelmsen recently bought a 15 million USD interest in the Port of Tianjin's new RoRo facility designed to export up to 500,000 Chinese made vehicles into the United States. This matches with the facility they proposed for Vancouver USA except the Communists didn't have a vote and WW volunteered to pay a substantial amount. So, how do you measure the jobs gained or lost? Chicom jobs or the jobs of American workers?

I have repeatedly (since the late 1990's) advocated the Port seek out opportunities which would create jobs that would benefit our country's balance of trade. I think they will have problems getting the general publics support if they do otherwise.

2. Private-for-hire Committee - I think this is a necessary (some would argue overdue) committee. We need to have standards in place that will protect the public (vehicle safety and personnel hiring), allow for competition, and create interstate compacts with the regional cities. Hopefully, those appointed to the committee will come up with some proposals.

3. Angelo Development Application - As will a lot of their work, the Angelo's seemed to place architect Larry Wilson in a leadership role. An experienced AIA member, Larry should have put more work into the critical community involvement portion of this project. The other business people and neighborhood groups who are now so concerned could have been made assets rather than liabilities in pursuing the application. I would like to see the Angelo's pull this project back for a couple of months and work this out with the local community then resubmit to the council.

1. What would those "other opportunities" be, specifically?

2. First I've heard of that concept, so if you can flesh that out a bit I'd certainly appreciate it.

3. Figure the odds for me that Angelo will proceed at any speed other than Full Ahead??

Pat Campbell

1. This is a matter of our port officials making choices that are beneficial to the country as a whole. What is obviously flawed will simply not get a public vote. Woody waste ethanol production and importing massive numbers of foreign produced vehicles simply don't meet the smell test for a sound public (tax) investment in American jobs. Despite Bart Phillip's whining about the IDDL's defeat, he lef an important business relocation post go unfilled for nearly a year. Why wasn't Bart out touting the Port's benefits to businesses considering relocation?

2. Compact agreements create the framework for interstate cooperation and operations. For example our taxi companies and theirs could be both allowed to pick up and drop off passengers in Vancouver and at PDX under such an agreement. The agreement would establish continuous appropriate regulation.

3. You asked for an opinion and I gave you one...

Behind health care crisis: Drive for profits
By G. Dunkel
Published Sep 13, 2007 8:57 PM

Most press reports on the health-insurance crisis in the United States and the struggle to expand the States Children Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) ignore its human costs. Some 47 million people, according to the Census Bureau, have no health insurance, and accordingly get sicker, suffer more and sometimes die unnecessarily because they lack assured access to health care.

Even for many who have health insurance, the co-pays—their share of the costs of care—can be so high that they have to forgo that care. Insurance companies also have hundreds of reasons for denying a claim, from calling the symptom a “pre-existing condition” to designating a treatment “experimental” or “out of network.” Insurers often deny legitimate claims routinely, expecting that many insured will not pursue the claim further.

Those with health problems are not the only ones who suffer from a lack of health insurance. Their families and society as a whole lose what these individuals would contribute, and often must devote resources to the patient’s care.

**SCHNIPP**

If you pay attention to these issues like I do, you know that this article's main drive is an attempt to get illegal aliens health care on the public dime by allowing them to be treated under SCHIP. It's bogus in my view for many reasons, but that's not the purpose of this thread....

I want to know what other articles Pat Campbell approves of from this website as well...articles such as..

Truth Commission debunks Columbus myths
http://www.workers.org/2007/us/truth-0920/

Colorado AIM and the Transform Columbus Day Alliance held a two-day Truth Commission in Denver on Sept. 8-9 as Colorado gears up for the 100th year since it began celebrating Columbus Day and as activists mobilized to oppose to the iconization of the slave trader and mass murderer.

What's the mood in the U.S. military?
http://www.workers.org/2007/us/military-0913/

After four-plus years of a failed occupation of Iraq and a U.S. regime that refuses to leave, two questions have become vital: What is the strength of the Iraqi resistance? What is the mood of the U.S. rank-and-file troops? This article discusses the latter question.

Or maybe it is the large collection of Far-Left politically correct cartoons that you favor as well??

No, that website has never been on my favorites list. You have to keep in mind that for almost 4 years I listened to commie radio 12 hours per day, 6-7 days per week. I believe in keeping my inputs open. You can bet they taught you to do so in the ASA.

Of course Pat; satire cuts sharpest when it contains the truth...

Communism is one of my pet peeves, and it is troubling that so many people don't recognize it when they see it. I question the validity of anything that is published at a website run by overt communists. Communism by definition is antithemic to the United States and everything it stands for. It is everything we are not, and it encourages and underwrites our destruction whenever it can.

Most of all, communism has no place in a City Council race. I counsel to check your sources, and know thy audience...

INDOOR MARKET HEARS VERDICT: IT’S REALLY OVER: With that Columbian headline, the final curtain comes down on yet another financial disaster planned, aided and abetted by the Current Vancouver City Council.

This latest waste of your taxpayer dollars following:

1. the financial failure of numerous tax subsidized ”downtown” publicly owned parking garages;
2. the spending of 73 million tax dollars to build the Hilton Hotel/Convention Center along with another $2,000,000.00 a year tax dollar subsidy to keep it afloat;
3. the $500,000 a year in tax dollars that will be spent for the next 25 years to subsidize the Killian Pacific Riverwest /New Library project;
4. the 12 million being spent to “Build a Bridge to Nowhere” over highway 14;;
5. the selling to one of the city’s favorite developers a $3,000,000.00 publicly owned city block for a mere $200,000 and,
6. the 10-year property tax breaks (legal kickbacks) given to selected private developers

to mention a few, suggest that current Council Members be gives an “F -Minus” in Economics 101.

What we really need, in council members, are people who have the ability to stop following the leader and the ability to prioritize and spend wisely, our hard-earned tax dollars.

And if that wasn’t enough, after years of spending millions and millions of our hard earned tax dollars to revitalize “Downtown” (without a vote of the people), the words of Lee Coulthard, Vice President of the Indoors Market Board of Directors;

“THERE IS NOT ENOUGH POPULATION DOWNTOWN DURING THE WEEK FOR IT (THE INDOOR MARKET) TO BE VIABLE”

is contrary to what the incumbent council members predicted when they voted to spend tax dollars to CURE THEIR PORTLAND ENVY.

I could have sworn that during the debate on whether or not to build the hotel/convention center/hockey rink with taxpayer dollars, the current council said that as soon as the hotel/convention center/hockey rink were built the downtown streets would be crowded with people 24 hours a day. (Those comments are available on CCTV video tapes)

Also, I didn’t find too much comfort in the Mayor’s comments,

“THE FUTURE OF DOWNTOWN DOES NOT REALLY HINGE ON THE INDOOR MARKET AT THIS TIME”

(it would be nice to know just what it does hinge on other than throwing more tax dollars at it, as nothing done to date seems to be working).

In my Opinion, neither of these comments appear to be a ringing endorsement that the millions of tax dollars already spent downtown and on associated boondoggles were some of the of current council’s more intelligent decisions on prioritizing how our hard earned tax dollars should be spent.

And, to add insult to injury, the Port of Vancouver Commissioners, led by Arch Miller attempted without a vote of the people to increase their take of your property taxes by 132%.

Good Grief!!!

All is not lost however, we can right these wrongs in November by voting some of these tax and spend rascals out of office.

Don’t let them continue to waste your tax dollars or tax you out of your home. In November, you can VOTE FOR A CHANGE. VOTE for STEMPER and CAMPBELL for City Council and OLIVER for Port Commissioner.

We deserve to be listened to and represented, not dictated to. Pass this on.

1. The consultants did not feel the hotel would be a viable business and they appear to have been proven right. I would like to see the city place the hotel on the open market and try to sell it at a profit. The funds would be used to establish a city emergency fund.

2. This matter needs to be referred to the Feds for investigation.

3. Many cities advertise assets such as this in the Wall Street Journal and similar venues to get the best price. Vancouver seems to be involved in insider deals.

4. Vancouver needs to have a financial stand down. Until there is a general public understanding of our assets, obligations, and needs for emergencies and economic downturns, taxes and auto license fees should not be altered. An educated public would be in a position to vote on these matters.

5. No written answer

6. No written answer

7. Vancouver has abused this process. The tax incentives are no longer necessary.

8. There is plenty of room at the current main library site to build a new structure and create cheaper parking arrangements. This parking stall partnership is likely to cause more problems that it solves and in my mind a violation of the library bond supporters’ trust.

9. This also happened with the old Lucky Lager brewery. I don’t consider such deals as reasonable. Again, I think these issues would benefit from a Fed legality review.

10. You don’t thwart the people’s intent by using the letter of the law instead of applying the spirit of the law. There should have been a vote on hotel issue.

11. I believe a new bridge is needed but it should be for straight forward reasons to facilitate adequate and safe interstate and river transportation. I would personally prefer a tunnel that would bypass Jantzen Beach. As I have said before, this is a national problem with local implications, not just a local problem to be dealt with by the unassisted local tax payers. My yes vote would be conditioned.

12. I would like to see a change in the city managers’ direction if not a change in managers. He should not be involved in influencing folks to run for city office or other matters that would influence the development of a political climate to his liking.

13. I think it is a bad idea to annex at this point whether or not the infrastructure is in place. I believe we may have overreached already and need an accurate and understandable accounting of where we are as a city. Growing to grow is not acceptable.

14. There are good arguments for and against going to a district basis. For now I believe with the right people, its best to keep our current system.

15. We certainly need a lobbyist, but don’t need to be directing Mr. Brown to support legislation removing the voters’ role in taxation. The voters simply need to fire the politicians who gave Mr. Brown his marching orders.

16. When you realize the developers have their own landscape services interest this makes even less sense…

Explaining Liberal Thinking In A Single Column

http://www.townhall.com/columnists/JohnHawkins/2007/09/21/explaining_liberal_thinking_in_a_single_column

Liberals love to think of themselves as intellectual and nuanced, but liberalism is incredibly simplistic. It's nothing more than "childlike emotionalism applied to adult issues." Very seldom does any issue that doesn't involve pandering to their supporters boil down at its core level to more than feeling "nice" or "mean" to liberals. This makes liberals ill equipped to deal with complex issues.

Since liberals tend to support or oppose policies based on how those policies make them feel about themselves, they do very little intellectual examination of whether the policies they advocate work or not. That's because it doesn't matter to them whether the policy is effective or not; it matters whether advocating the policy makes them feel "good" or "bad," "compassionate" or "stingy," "nice" or "mean."

Because of this, liberalism has more in common with religion than it does with other political ideologies like conservatism or libertarianism. Moreover, liberal beliefs are more like religious doctrine than any sort of battle-tested policies that bear up under logic or examination. Although the interpretation of the doctrine that the Left supports may change a bit over time, just as religious doctrine does, it's essentially taken on faith, like scripture.

That's why, for example, you may see ferocious debates on the right side of the blogosphere about the war, illegal immigration, or spending. But, with the netroots, the debates almost always revolve around the best strategy to get more liberals elected. The issues are not really up for debate, other than debate over how to get them enacted.

This same thinking leads to very little criticism of liberals by other liberals. Liberals will ferociously defend and even happily echo the lies of other liberals. Liberal feminists will defend Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy. Liberals who pride themselves on being tolerant of other races will support Robert Byrd. Why? Because even if they're wrong, they're still fellow liberals -- which must mean they’re nice people. What this leads to is an attitude that can be summed up like so: "The only things that a liberal can do wrong is to be insufficiently liberal, to question an important plank of the liberal agenda, or to do something politically that aids conservatives."

Conservatives, on the other hand, just by virtue of being conservatives, are mean at best and evil at worst. Is it wrong to lie about an evil person? Technically, "yes," but there's a reason "two wrongs don't make a right" is said so often -- it's because so many people do believe "two wrongs do make a right." Moreover, what about defending the indefensible? Well, is it wrong to defend a good (liberal) person who is being attacked by an evil (conservative) person, even if it's justifiable? At the gut level, most liberals don't think so.

Once you understand what I've written so far, you can understand everything that liberals do.

* Why are so many liberals hostile to religion? Because religion sets rules and tells people that if they break those rules, they're sinning! That keeps people from doing things that make them feel good and telling people that they're sinning makes them feel bad.

* Why are so many liberals hostile to the troops? Because the troops tend to be conservative (evil) and because they're out killing people and breaking things (which would make most liberals feel like bad people).

* Why are so many liberals unpatriotic? It makes liberals feel morally superior to rant about what's wrong with their own country. Plus, as an added bonus, people from other nations agree with them and that makes them feel good as well.

* Why do so many liberals have so much confidence in the government? With liberals, it's not about whether something works or not, it's about how it makes them feel.

So, they can look at the IRS, post office, airport security, FEMA, and ICE and then say, "These are the same people we want handling our health care" -- because it's about making themselves feel good that they got people insured, not about getting the best system of health care for everyone.

* Why do so many liberals have so much confidence in the UN? See the previous answer and apply it on a global scale. The UN may be corrupt, anti-American, and utterly incompetent, but it makes liberals feel good to think that they're sending money to the poor in some godforsaken country (sure, it's not their money and almost all the money may be wasted or stolen, but it's the thought that counts).

* Why are liberals so hostile to successful people who don't happen to be celebrities, trial lawyers, or big donors to the Democratic Party? Again, this is another great opportunity for them to feel morally superior. They can feel like good people because they want to give money to the poor -- granted, not their money, but rich people's money. The rich have so much and the poor have so little, so why shouldn't liberals take it from them and then pat themselves on the back for their compassion?

Once you understand the basics of how liberals think, you can understand everything that they do. Granted, there will be a few exceptions, but if the vast herd of liberals is doing something that doesn't seem to fit the template, it's either because there's money or sex involved, they're doing what they have to do to win politically, they’re taking that position because they refuse to be on the same side as conservatives, or there's something going on you don't know about and it's not really an exception.

You've heard of the Dog Whisperer, right? Well, congrats, because after reading this column, you are now a "liberal whisperer" and you understand everything you need to know about the way that liberals think.

I understand that too, and it flies in the face of reality if anyone thinks they can serve on City Council, and completely disregard the local media. I don't like the columbian any more than many people here in town, but I also recognize that if I were to run for public office, I would have to swallow my pride and demonstrate how effectively I can communicate by dealing with the columbian if I expected to ever get myself elected.

Giving your opponent the floor is honorable, but it certainly isn't an effective way to promote your own campaign, and it certainly sends the wrong message to anyone who watches it.

Pat Campbell

Let me correct somethings:

I have always said that I would meet with professional reporters but not with the Columbian's Editorial Board. I do not have any problem with the Columbian reporters including Jeffrey Mize who was to do the Tonkovich/Campbell CVTV interview. (Mr. Mize called me prior to the session to confirm I would not participate; he was not left in the lurch so to speak.) Mr. Mize or another Columbian reporter may be interviewing me for the usual election oriented articles in the new few weeks.

I do have a problem with CVTV in principle (not independent of the city council and manager) and because I was bit last time when originally interviewed by Tony Bacon one of my then opponent's financial supporters.

-Pat

Good piece. Nice to learn a little more about Genny who was our good and faithful Local 313 secretary for many years. Her son served in the Middle East recently.

I see some of the local “chicken hawks” are already attacking her and the columbian article. They might as well attack free speech directly. One who banned me from posting on his blog will probably soon show up here again to berate our local peace workers.

Per Wiki...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chickenhawk_(politics)

Chickenhawk (also chicken hawk and chicken-hawk; sometimes designated after a person's name by [c.h.]) is a political epithet used in the United States to criticize a politician, bureaucrat, or commentator who strongly supports a war or other military action, but has never personally been in a war, especially if that person actively avoided military service when of draft age.

Pat Campbell posted the comment I quoted here, last night at Democracy for Vancouver, referring to me as a "Chickenhawk"

For the record, I joined the Navy before I graduated from High School, on a Delayed Enlistment Program, even though I was in no danger of being drafted for duty in Vietnam.

In other words, they didn't have to draft me, I volunteered.

For the record, I served Honorably for a twenty year career in the United States Navy, and retired from Active Duty as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, with an Air Warfare designation. I do not flaunt my military rate unless I have to, (as opposed to Campbell's spokesman Larry Patella) so prehaps Pat was simply misinformed.

On the other hand, Pat was more likely running off at the mouth in a lame effort to appease a group he obviously feels akin to, and feels comfortable knowing they will vote for him.

It's a form of hate speech for anyone to refer to a retired military Veteran as a "Chicken Hawk". It sounds to me perhaps the stress of running yet another failed political campaign is catching up to Pat Campbell, and the rising bile in his throat is making him lash out at people like me. Maybe it makes him feel better.

In any case, with an attitude like this about Veterans, why in the world would anyone vote for Pat Campbell??

On Edit, an insufferable SOB like Pat Campbell doesn't deserve it, but I have no problem with people knowing who I really am, and just how personally I take a remark like Campbell made last night. The fact he has proffered no apology speaks volumes about his character, or the lack thereof. I know he's aware of this thread becasue he surfed through in the last 20 minutes or so.

So here you are Pat, my credentials. I don't toss them around like Patella does, but I think it's appropriate to put this up right here.

Kiss my ass Pat, and your temporary ban is now permanent. I won't suffer the likes of pandering internet trash like you cluttering up my website any longer. You have absolutely no business in any elected office whatsoever.
