SEATTLE -- Washington State Ferries reports there were no eBay bids on the state's four 80-year-old Steel Electric ferries that were pulled from service in November.

The minimum bid was $350,000 each for the Illahee, Nisqually, Klickitat and Quinault. The bidding closed last weekend.

Still, ferries spokeswoman Marta Coursey says there are some people interested in purchasing the boats. She says the potential buyers have inspected the vessels and expressed an interest in buying all four at a lower, nondisclosed price.

Coursey says the ferry system's legal department is checking with the state General Administration office to see if it will allow the ferry system to negotiate such a sale.

It will cost more than $350,000 just to safely scrap those hulls. In the meantime, if Washington State DOT says they cannot be effectively repaired and removed them from service for safety reasons, then how can the State turn around and take on the liability of selling the hulls for anything other than scrap metal?

Guess there are enough fools taking them on to use them as boats?

Or they were just trying to sell them off to the highest bidder, that could have included scrap dealers-dismantlers.
