The Oregonian newspaper is closing three metro bureaus and merging the staffs into three other bureaus.

Fred Stickel, publisher of Oregon's largest daily newspaper, said the staff of the bureaus in Gresham, Tigard and Vancouver, Wash., will move to the south bureau in Oregon City, the west bureau in Southwest Portland and the Multnomah County bureau in Portland.

Stickel on Monday confirmed the Gresham bureau staff will move to the Multnomah County bureau, but said details for the other bureaus are still being worked out.

Stickel said there would be no layoffs of staff as a result of the consolidation of the bureaus and that coverage of Gresham, Tigard and Vancouver, Wash., will not be affected.

He also said the weekly Thursday newspapers for the cities losing the bureaus will still be published.

It's not surprising to see the Oregonian consolidate things a bit, as the advertising bust is hitting them along with everyone else. The Oregonian has the creds and the size to weather this downturn, where other papers are slashing themselves to pieces in order to stay alive.

If you read my comments on another thread of a second local newspaper (or should I state third.) They're more going to a correspondent system that the Oregonian and Columbian seems to be going to as well.

Basically a roving reporter who talks about a topic instead of the old tabloid type news that used to permeate and get general interest.

Sorry to hear that the Oregonian consolidated operations, lucky major newsroom staff were not cut as well like the Seattle Times, P-I and many other Pacific Northwest news media. (including radio and television.)
