Investment bank Merrill Lynch warned that GM needs to raise funds and that bankruptcy was "not impossible".

GM has suffered from falling sales as US consumers have cut back on spending and record fuel costs have seen them switch to smaller, more efficient cars.

GM's shares hit a low of $9.96, before closing down 15% at $9.98 on Wednesday.

The share price touched its lowest level since September 1954, when the stock hit $9.92 during trading.

GM shares have fallen 60% so far this year and Merril Lynch predicted that the shares could fall even further.

"We believe there is potential downside in the stock below $7 and that bankruptcy is not impossible if the market continues to deteriorate and significant incremental capital is not raised," said analyst John Murphy.

Merrill's had previously predicted a value of $28 for GM's shares.

Sales fall

Another analyst, David Healy from Burnham Securities was less pessimistic about GM's prospects.

"My own opinion is that they're unlikely to file [for bankruptcy]," Mr Healy said.

"But the conditions in the auto industry are so tough for everybody right now, especially for GM, and that's why people see this as plausible."

General Motors suffered a big fall in US sales in June, down 18.5% compared with the same month in 2007.

The figures, however, were still better-than-expected and its sales fall was less than rival Toyota, which reported sales that were 21.4% lower.

All of the major carmakers in the US have experienced a shift in consumer demand from sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and light trucks to smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles as petrol costs have spiralled.

Last month, GM announced the closure of a number of plants in North American and Mexico that make trucks and SUVs.

Rival Chrysler said it would close a minivan factory and Ford announced a significant cut in production.

One of the reasons I was interested in posting this news items is that GM was once one of the bellwether Fortune 100 companies that used to own HughesSat (sold to PanAMSat I believe.) and many other side businesses than just the car business that people have known them for to help them through the car business cycles.

For over a year, I have been personally concerned about Chrysler (now owned by a conglomeration of Cereberus and Daimler Benz and small points.) Ford and Gm have been spewing huge amounts of cash to catch up with their foreign rivals even though they each own a lot or parts of older former rivals during a bulking up period in the 1990's.

Now if this is correct and GM is nearing the same conclusion the airlines, IBM and others have been repeatedly going into bankruptcy protection the past ten years to shift their pension benefit plans and retiree benefits on to the federal government and many other costs.

Now that their big and highest performing cash cows (SUV, Trucks, Vans and former military lookalikes) are no longer at-item because of the economy and gas prices, so they could no longer hide their expenses behind these prides and joys, can someone please tell me what they're planning to do?

GM stock closed at under $10 a share yesterday for the first time since 1954! Ike was President the last time you could buy GM stock so cheap.

Between the crashing automobile markets for SUV's, and the burden of carrying the UAW on it's back for decades, I wonder if GM can really recover. They say they have enough cash to get through the year, and there is no telling what next year will bring...

This is another company that has national implications if it is allowed to crash and burn...

Its not just GM, but Ford that took on Alan Mullally of Boeing fame to clean up its act and Chrysler. Look at the airlines?

American Airlines just announced that it was going to lay off 8,000 new people and cut 25 percent more service. Along with cutting a lot of its regional air service and MD-80 fleet.

So its flowing over Multiple industries. Even HP, IBM, Lenovo and technical companies are announcing similar feats. Was there not a recent article about HP locally?
