Citing signs of progress on the negotiating front, the Port of Vancouver decided Tuesday to once again to hold off on an eminent domain proposal targeting the land of an area farming family.

The Port of Vancouver commissioners voted 3-0 to table the proposal until their Oct. 14 meeting. The board took a similar action at its May 27 meeting.

Several agencies have been negotiating with the Colf family to acquire land for the Columbia River channel-deepening project. A resolution to acquire the property through eminent domain — an agency option when negotiations fail — was on the commissioners’ agenda Tuesday morning. But that step may not be necessary, port officials said.

“The parties are continuing to try to work out an amicable solution,” said Larry Paulson, executive director of the Port of Vancouver.

I predict that this will never go to Eminent Domain, because the Colf Family will decide they want the money instead.

Matter of time...

Nice to see Tom is writing back on the beat again here in the 'couv.

I am not sure how the Colf family will go or not, but right now this is really just a PR campaign on both sides. And if the Colf family wants to take it that far, they could see imminent domain in their future.

But I suspect Chief might have the point right on.

The Commissioners delayed this decision until October for good reason, and they indicated that is because the Colf Family is close to a deal on these properties. The Commission would much rather see them settle, but are prepared to take the property in order to keep the channel deepening project on track.

We'll probably see a settlement notice in the late summer...
