I just sent this note off to my two favorite City Council Critters, Larry Smith and Tim Leavitt, to see if they can get someone to cut the grass at the old Evergreen Airport. It really is getting to be a mess. I went out there today with my weedeater, and cut a path so I can at least get in and out, and carved out a large anchor circle in the middle of the field so my gear doesn't get lost...

Subject: Evergreen Airport mowing

Hi guys!

Now that the old Evergreen Airport is officially no more, and demolition of the old buildings is completed, the Contractor has faded from the property, and it is becoming overgrown.

I realize the City has no interest in it, but a lot of people are using the old taxiway that is clearly "X"'d off on both ends, for walking pets, jogging, walking dogs, flying kites, bicycling, etc.

*I also realize that all of that above said activities are technically trespassing on the property as well. That said...

What can be done to get the field mowed? The grass is over 2 feet high, and growing. Weeds are uncontrolled as well, and perhaps that might drive a resolution...

Is there anything either of you can do to simply have someone mow the field? I know fuel costs are high and everyone is cutting back, but it would really enhance some nice recreational space if the grass were cut.

Thanks for a moment.

I heard back from both Councilmen Leavitt and Smith, and both said that the City Manager will look into this. That doesn't mean that the City is going to mow it, but I think the City Manager has the means to get the owners to mow it...

8-) Anyone want to buy a weed farm? I bet that one is for a nice sale price.

Lets hope very soon a nice phone call and the right encouragements are expressed to please go out and mow it down to make the area look a lot nicer.

I went out Sunday with my weed eater and hacked myself a path through to the taxiway, and then cleared out a 10 x 10 anchor spot. If they mow the field, I may follow up with a good dose of weed killer in a couple of spots just to be doubly sure that I can find those anchor spots again.

I was out there for about an hour last night flying the big kite with three lightning bolts flying from the line. It was a straight West wind, and I only wanted to put the big one up with as little fuss as possible, so I parked the Tracker on the taxiway and anchored off of the car's towing loop that is bolted to the frame. I just put a length of rope through it and used carabiner to attach my usual rig with the 1100 lb test line.

Worked really well and I was airborne within 15 minutes of arriving. It usually takes that long just to properly set and rig the ground anchor, and just as long to knock it back down.

I see the political wheels are not turning fast enough I suspose?

How much does one think it would to rent a tractor, human and go out mow?
How about Lawn more Race trials? Who ever can mow the fastest, the greatest amount or gum up their works the fastest..

Oh no, I better stop right there or I might just come up with my own next charity and community event!?!?!?!?!

Remember the last time I got in some hot water with tefen and a few others over my old "pat Jollota-type" ride around the community history event on buses.

I wanted to say "Thanks!" to the City Manager and his Staff for getting the old airport field mowed a couple of days ago. It's knocked down pretty good over there, and I was out flying kites on the field last night. My notes to City Council members soliciting some friendly help paid off. Many here in town could follow my example...

It's good to know who to call, but better to know how to ask, in order to get things done....

Two thumbs up and a tip of the hat...

I would like to also note that C-tran put up a brand new covered stop just south. For those who ride the #80 up to Firstenburg, new library or winco who switch off the #37 off Mill Plain bus near 136th Avenue this is SUCH a wonderful relief to be out of the WIND, COLD and Rain that hardly ever hits downtown Vancouver that often but hits the Entrance to the Columbia River Gorge more days of the year than I count.

Thank you to the critters and C-tran for looking out for a few pluses in the lives of East Vancouver riders. (Tim and Larry and C-tran Thank you...)
