AUDIT BY STATE GIVES VANCOUVER HIGH MARKS FOR RESPONSE TO PUBLIC RECORDS REQUESTS
The Performance Audit Report evaluating Open Public Records Practices by 30 government entities released today by the Washington State Auditor Brian Sonntag gives the city of Vancouver high marks for its cooperative, timely and complete response to public records requests.
City Manager Pat McDonnell said that “The City is proud of its performance in this audit. We believe that our commitment to high standards both in terms of customer service and compliance with state law is represented in our exemplary performance.”
The report notes that the City offers a “user-friendly” website to provide relevant information including an optional public records request form for requestors. In addition, the City was mentioned as demonstrating “best practices” in a number of specific areas detailed in the report, McDonnell noted.
The audit was conducted by the State Auditor under the requirements of Initiative 900 which was approved by voters November 2005. I-900 gives the auditor’s office the authority to conduct independent performance audits of state and local governments to promote accountability and cost-effective use of public resources.
I-900 also requires local legislative bodies to conduct a public hearing within 30 days of the issue of a performance audit report to consider the findings of the audit and to receive public comments. The Vancouver City Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the public records audit report at its regular meeting June 16, 2008.
