Sorry folks, but in our house we both agreed to reject this massive bond measure for a number of reasons.

First, over 58% of our current Property Taxes go to fund the schools right now. We think they should be making do with what they have, not asking for a quarter of a billion dollars worth of new funding.

Next, this bond measure is way in excess of anything we have ever been asked to cosider in the Evergreen District. The School Board is asking for a lot of things that they have not made the case for, such as completely replacing three moderately older schools along with adding even more new schools.

The "Health and BioSciences Academy (HBSA)" they want is news to me as well, until this measure hit my mailbox I had not heard there was such a need for such a facility. If we had 100% literacy coming out of the Evergreen School District, and all Seniors had straight "A" Grades in the basic three R's, we still wouldn't need a Health and BioSciences Academy since we have many Colleges in the area and that is a more approporiate place for something like that.

In addition, I think there are way too many $100K Salaried positions at Evergreen Schools, and that appears to be where a lot of the current 58% of my Property taxes are going right now. I can't see throwing a quarter of a billion more their way until they prove to me they have tightened their belts and are spending what they are getting effectively.

I'll note for the record I got my ballot about two or three days ago, so if you have not your Ballot by this afternoon, please go on Monday down to the Clark County Elections office or give them a call for a new one.

Voting is what gives me to the right and privilege to continuously complain about Chief riding the Loot Rail express back into Portland. So please vote and make you voice loud and clear on the subject at hand.

Today is the day when we find out how these School Bonds fared. We should have results around 8:30 tonight...

Ballot returns so far are modest. Through yesterday, 5/20, approximately 36% of the 80,504 ballots sent out had been returned.

All that is needed is a simple majority for the measure to pass.

I'm not going to gloat here, but I am relieved that this monstrosity was defeated as soundly as it was. I think Evergreen way over-reached on this, and none of the supporters should be teray-eyed surprized that the voters are in no mood to raise taxes, especially not as much as this bond would have raised them.

Sorry folks...not never, but certainly not now.

shhhh.. :-() If you think your taxes are low now, watch what comes up in the next couple of years for "Street utility tax and fees" and other fine things that are coming from VDOT. (City of Vancouver Transportation Department.)

I saw some speculation in the paper that Council may consider trimming the City's Transportation Improvement Plan. During the runup to the last bi-ennium budget fight, I remember pegging the amount to fund the entire TIP at a little over $350 Million or so, and in fact Jeanne Stewart dryly proposed that the City sponsor a bond measure for that amount, and get it over with...

I haven't looked at the TIP lately, but it's got to be well in excess of $300K by now.

As for the street maintenance fees, they need to tread lightly there too. What exactly are we paying for with out taxes if we have to slice Police, Fire, street repairs, et al; while continuing to spend Millions on difficult to develop Downtown projects??

These kinds of questions are what fuel the fires of CAVE, but instead of pursuing real solutions by putting up candidates who have a prayer of winning decisively, CAVE gloms onto these issues so that Larry Patella has another issue to pound on his personal podium about with his shoe...
