Cliff Lee tries to continue his amazing start to the season this evening when the Cleveland Indians play the middle test of their three- game series with the Seattle Mariners at Progressive Field.
Lee, who had to fight for a spot in the rotation in Spring Training, has been incredible for the Tribe in the early going, winning all four of his starts, while pitching to a miniscule 0.28 earned run average and not allowing a run in either of his last two outings.
The 29-year-old left-hander, who enters tonight's tilt with a 21 scoreless innings streak, tossed a three-hit shutout against the Kansas City Royals his last time out. He also struck out nine without walking a batter.
Lee has also had success against the M's in his career, posting a 5-1 mark with a 3.83 ERA in nine games, eight of which have been starts.
Seattle will hand the ball to veteran southpaw Jarrod Washburn, who is 1-3 with a 4.03 ERA on the year. Washburn received a no-decision on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles, as he yielded two runs and six hits in five innings of his team's 8-7 loss.
Washburn is 7-6 lifetime against the Indians with a 4.61 ERA in 17 starts.
In the opener of this set on Tuesday, Adrian Beltre hit a go-ahead three-run homer as part of a five-run ninth inning, as Seattle pulled out a 7-2 win. Beltre finished the night 2-for-2 with three walks, while Jose Vidro and Yuniesky Betancourt drove in a pair of runs each for the Mariners, who have won two of their last three.
