Interesting letter to the editor from the Port of Vancouver's Executive Director, Larry Paulson...

Special recognition and thanks are due Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., for her dedication to building a clean energy economy here in the Pacific Northwest. Cantwell and her staff have long recognized the importance of extending the federal renewable energy tax credits and have worked tirelessly to extend the credits before their scheduled lapse at the end of this year.

In 2007, the Port of Vancouver imported 305 complete wind turbines and an additional 120 towers, creating more than 72,000 additional labor hours at the port. These numbers are up from 2005, when the port handled 83 complete turbines and realized an additional 13,000 labor hours. The wind energy business and the resulting jobs can be directly attributed to the wind energy tax credit championed by the senator.

Passage of the Cantwell-Ensign Clean Energy Tax Stimulus Act approved by the Senate on April 10 included extension of the Production Tax Credit for wind energy (and other clean energy resources) for one year. The bill now moves to the House.

As executive director of the port, it is my hope that our representatives in Congress will follow Cantwell’s leadership and support these important investments in our region’s economy and environment.
