The transportation budget the Senate passed Tuesday includes $38.1 million for the Columbia River Crossing to cover the two-year period ending June 30, 2009.

That’s $15 million more than either the House budget or Gov. Chris Gregoire’s budget proposes for the Interstate 5 bridge replacement in the 2009-11 biennium.

The funding is for ongoing studies by an interagency task force. Budget writers are quick to say they have no idea how much the state of Washington will contribute once the full cost of the project is known and contributions from the federal government and the state of Oregon are figured in.

Tolling is almost certain to be a part of the funding package, they say.

Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver, was one of 10 senators to vote against the budget after his amendment to require the Washington State Department of Transportation to study the option of a third crossing, in addition to the I-5 and I-205 bridges, was rejected.

Benton, a member of the Senate Transportation Committee, said he remains convinced that the gridlock facing Clark County residents who commute to jobs in Oregon won’t be relieved by replacement of the I-5 Bridge.

“All I asked was that this idea continue right along with the study of a new I-5 bridge,” Benton said. “If it gets shelved now, people will stop talking about it; and when people stop talking about an idea, it dies. This would be a critical mistake; we will not get meaningful congestion relief without a new crossing.”

The Columbia River Crossing task force has rejected consideration of the third-bridge option, but the Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council is studying the future need for a third crossing outside the I-5 corridor.

Don, I do agree with you it would be nice to have a third rail or way across the river.

Have you ever considered using the bridge near Kelso-Longview over the Columbia River as a third bridge alternative? No, its not going to be convenient, cheap or easy solution. Yes, people are going to be inconvenienced but the infrastructure is all ready built, its in place and really doesn't need a whole bunch of millions to create?

Do agree with you that we need to start looking at a third bridge option in Clark County and may be one that includes going up through Cowlitz County along the Cascades? Not sure it would get built because going along the Cascades near Mount Saint Helens would get that type of project killed.

Another option that our fellow member here, Chief commented about some months back from a former Port of Vancouver official was to build a bridge across Lady Island that used to be a ferry crossing from Vancouver to Portland. This could be a good truck route or maybe a congestion reliever. But there are many other places one could look.

Though I'm going to suggest that building ANY bridge through the Vancouver Lake Lowlands is a very STUPID idea with all of the flooding issues have had in the recent past. One would have to build a bridge in that area on concrete stilts high enough to out of the water or any future flooding situations.

Plus one new wrinkle I just thought up, all of the Vancouver LAKE lowlands is an FAA flight paths into PDX. Any BRIDGE built in that area in the future will have the same issues that the Columbia River Crossing is currently going through. Also add in the tug boats and Marine Navigation problems of big Port ships, putting a bridge in that area is just plain foolhardy.

I read this article in my morning paper, and I get very nervous when I see Don Benton talking vaguely about "Third crossings". That phrase has been hijacked and has come to mean that half-baked plan to divert I-5 onto SR-30 in Oregon via Sauvie's Island...

As little as i see or hear from Don Benton these days, I wonder what he really means, or if he actually knows what he's talking about on this...

You gotta be kidding me WB!! The CC Republicans would shoot at the first sight of a Chief Wahoo insignia. Those Country Clubbers don't talk to people like me because I think they're afraid I may question their Conservatism...

And I do!

So you don't go to the frequent party animal club houses with Jim Dunn and Don Benton? Boy that SURE would be fun???

Why would they run from you if you question their very core beliefs? If you have information in hand and can bring it to their attention, what is wrong with that? As long as your providing information with your insults, I'd be ok with it.

Your NOTHING like some of the regulars over in East Vancouver (remain Nameless) that throw regular untruths and falsehoods along long diatribes. If your commentary is structured and GOOD like you do for the Port, what is there to complain about?

Politics is NOT a beauty sport or pageant. If you have stand the heat of the kilns in the media spotlight, don't be an elected member OR party official.
