The Columbian
A Vancouver man who identified himself as a hostage during an armed confrontation with Vancouver police last summer has been accused of helping set up an ambush for a SWAT team sent in to rescue him.
Police arrested Shane Edward Runyon on suspicion of four counts of first degree attempted murder, alleging that he lied when he told authorities he was being held hostage by Matthew Hastings on July 18, 2007.
During the rescue attempt, SWAT team members came under fire. One officer was shot and severely wounded.
A police bulletin said evidence led investigators to believe that "Mr. Runyan knowingly assisted Matthew Hastings by falsely representing himself as a 'hostage' in an effort to create an ambush situation for the police officers attempting to rescue him."
Runyon was arrested without incident at 11:55 a.m. Wednesday at 10618 N.E. 7th Street, the bulletin said. Runyan was booked into the Clark County Jail.
I'm surprized it took this long to bring charges on this guy, considering all of the attention this got when it first happened.
We'll see what else is forthcoming on this one...
