Last night I had the opportunity to watch the Port of Vancouver give away more of our hard earned tax dollar. In a rerun of Tuesdays Port Commission Meeting I watched a two of the Port Commissioners who by the way attempted to increase our property taxes by a whopping 132% argue to increase port employee health benefits. As I understood the argument, they wanted to add to the already generous Health Package that included full medical benefits for employee and family, Co-payments.
In response to questions by Commissioner Oliver, Staff and other commissioners justified the approximate $89,000 benefit increase by stating it was necessary to compete with private industry and to retain good employees.
In his period of economic downturn, I am sure there are a good number of good employees who would gladly fill any position that might become vacant if the Health Package was not sweetened.
But then it is only taxpayer dollars they are spending.
