Multnomah County Sheriff Bernie Giusto announced this afternoon that he will retire this year, although he doesn't plan to vacate the office immediately.
The embattled sheriff, currently fighting state allegations that he is unfit to carry a badge, said his current troubles had less to do with the decision to retire than did several key agreements announced in the last month for the Wapato Jail and oversight of the sheriff's office.
I think the sooner he goes the better, especially with the State Ethics Commissione breathing down his neck...
