ANCHORAGE -- A 554-foot freighter with 24 people aboard was disabled and drifting Tuesday about 180 miles northeast of Attu Island in the Aleutian Islands in far southwestern Alaska, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard in Juneau received a call from the freighter at 7:14 p.m. Monday reporting that both engines had quit and asking for assistance, said Lt. Herbert Law with the Coast Guard Command Center in Juneau."

According to the morning paper, they are repaired and underway again. I'll be curious to see what exactly disabled them. This is an especially poor time of year to be putting to sea with less than operable equipment...

Not sure what disabled them.. But reading around the Associated Press, PI and Times, couldn't find much of what knocked them around or was the serious problem.

Hope it wasn't a rudder or engine problems.. Bering Straits isn't a place to fool around with.
