"Displays mark the season at the Capitol
For the first time, a depiction of the birth of Jesus Christ will take its place in the seat of state government this week, along with a menorah marking the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, and the traditional holiday tree, which had become a secular symbol of the holiday season.

The tree, a decorated fir erected in the Rotunda by the Association of Washington Business, became a lighting rod for debate in 2005, when a state legislator staged a protest demanding the decorated fir be called a "Christmas tree."
The next year, Chabad Lubavitch, a Jewish group in Seattle, placed a menorah in the Capitol, which Gov. Chris Gregoire lit."
